Masters Thesis

The masters thesis is the core of the masters degree. The objective of the masters thesis is to develop and demonstrate the ability to apply current research results to analyze and solve problems arising in complex systems. For instance, such systems are given by production networks, power grids, systems biology, or traffic flow. Writing a master’s thesis gives the opportunity to explore an academic topic in depth. In particular, it demonstrates the students readiness and ability for independent, demanding expert work.

Prerequisites and Application

  • In order to write your master’s thesis at the Chair of Scientific Computing you need to have successfully taken part in the offered lectures (e.g. numerical methods for differential equations) and master seminars as it is graphically shown HERE.
  • Please apply for one of the offered topics (upon request) or propose a thesis topic (or area of interest yourself, especially if it is based on collaboration with a company).
  • The acceptance of selfproposed thesis topics is subject to the Chair’s approval.
  • Any proposed topic should have a clear link to the Chair’s areas of research. Regardless of this, the decision about the coaching of a proposed topic lies at the Chair alone.

List of Topics

The Chair of Mathematical Modeling and Scientific Computing offers different types of master’s theses:

  • Research Work:  Based on a specific problem you will develop/extend a model and/or solution approach, which is usually described in literature. The main work of such a thesis is to formulate and investigate the model, to implement and test a solution approach, and to perform a sensitivity analysis in a numerical study.
  • Collaboration with Companies: If you are interested to write your thesis in cooperation with a company, it is necessary to introduce the thesis in a written synopsis (max. 2 pages). The subjects of your thesis have to be emphasized as well as questions that might be raised by the company. Furthermore, a scientific basis is highly important, i.e. it is necessary to point out the new scientific contribution. First suggestions regarding your approach as well as a time schedule with fixed start date would complete the synopsis.

Possible topics are regularly presented during our Scientific Computing Research Seminar (FSS and HWS).

Formal aspects

  • The preferred language is English.
  • A master thesis is usually 60-100 pages long.

Submission of Thesis

  • Submit your printed thesis (twofold) including a signed declaration.
  • Add a CD for each printed copy containing: data, programs, thesis as digital document (pdf).
  • Please contact Sabine Braak (B129) to submit your thesis at the latest on the closing date.
